Prideful - Ai thinks he's hot shit and beyond that, he has a reputation to uphold. While he comes by some of this honestly (Ai was praised by his village for his natural affinity for the Sien’tai arts, outpacing most of his classmates), Ai takes it to an extreme; he became haughty and often believed himself to be without equal. In the event that Ai is wrong about something, he will do everything to keep from admitting to it. Everything is always someone else's fault or he's a victim of circumstance. Admitting that he doesn't know how to do something or that he doesn't understand something is simply beyond Ai's abilities.
But while he does think he's the best, he will never stop pushing himself to be even better -- Ai wants to make certain that no one could even begin to hope to be his equal.
Irreverent - Ai’s people worship deities known as the Fates. The Fates rule their lives, they believe, picking and choosing everything that was to befall those loyal to them while letting the strings of destiny tangle how they would for the unbelievers. Despite truly believing in the powers of the Fates, Ai hates the idea that they control everything. He wants to be solely responsible for his accomplishments and harbors a deep bitterness that the credit is owed largely to his gods rather than his own work.
Loyal - Ai is fiercely loyal to his family and would do anything for his younger brothers. He stepped up to the plate to raise them as best he could (with help from adults in the village) when he was barely eleven, and he made sure the negativity surrounding their father's betrayal of the Sien’tai wouldn’t fall on them as he fought his way up through the ranks to secure their place in the tribe. Ai's loyalty is one of his best features. It goes beyond just the loyalty to family. Once he decides that a person is worth his time, he would move mountains to keep that person safe and to make sure they were happy. His pride means that he would never admit that he was doing that, and he would get embarrassed and shout to try to throw someone off if they found out, but he's secretly very attached to those who manage to get close to him.
Sarcastic - Ai doesn't know when to not provoke people -- he's largely done as well as he has in life only because of unnaturally quick reflexes and more good luck than any single man deserves. It started as a means of self defense; when it came out that his father had sold out some of their top assassins, ending in a disaster that left Ai's mother and father dead, Ailanne had to quickly find a way to stay in the good graces of the village for his sake as well as for the good of his two very young brothers. To do that, he adopted the personality of not caring what anyone thought of him and undermining other people before they could try to do the same to him. When you wear a mask for too long, though, the mask eventually becomes your face.
Biased - Ai lets his biases get the best of him on an almost daily basis. He never assumes someone outside of his people to be a capable human being, considering everyone he meets a fool and an idiot. Even when they prove again and again to be otherwise, it takes him a long time to grudgingly accept the truth.
Ai's strongest bias, though, is against those who use magic. He doesn't see what he does as magic, sticking instead to the story that manipulating the air is a gift passed down from the Fates. While Ailanne despises his father for what he did, he hates the magicians who killed his mother even more. He hates all magic now, and will usually refuse to cooperate and become openly hostile once he discovers someone uses magic.
Suitability: (Keep this section under 500 words.)
Ai will view the world at large with suspicion, but play by the letter of the law (if not the full intent) for as long as he needs until he can get a solid grasp on what is happening. As long as none of the native gems call anything they do magic by name, he’s going to view them with a bit of mild disdain, but not with outright hostility. Because he is interested in getting the lay of the land, Ai will go out of his way to speak to other characters in his quest to determine just how stuck here he is. He’ll actually make a bit of a game out of Synchrony -- going so far as to write himself very, very mundane conversation starters which he will use to harass his favorite victims with again and again.
There is going to be a crisis of faith going on the moment Ai gets even a hint that he can now ‘do magic’. Coupled with personality changes that make him more hot headed than normal during Phases, these abilities are going to be hard to sweep under the rug for him. Despite how much he’s desperately going to want to do that.Though this situation will make him more pissed off than usual, it will also leave him in a state to be more honest with others. Even if the only thing he’s being honest about is how furious he is.
Condition upon arrival: Perfect health.
Abilities: (Keep this section under 500 words.)
Air Manipulation - To call it magic is to risk Ai's wrath, but he has a good deal of control over the air around and inside him. Ai can use the air he breathes in to not only cushion a fall, but augment his jumping and acrobatics to get on top of a building, run along a wall, or blast things away from him. He can also create and solidify any type of object he wants as long as he can hold the form firmly in his mind. With this he can even make keys to certain (simple) locks after using the air to feel out the mechanism inside.
Unfortunately, making air into any sort of solid object is taxing on the body. Whenever he does something small it's not so bad, but the bigger the attempt, the more it puts his health at risk. Examples include forming a dagger out of air or jumping onto the roof of a typical one story building (no issue), stopping a five-story freefall and softening his landing (slightly winded), or controlling a jump from 15+ stories up (this would knock the wind out of him). Anything with more force than that kind of fall could risk breaking a rib or popping a lung, while anything too extreme would kill him.
Assassin - Ai is also quite skilled in the assassin's trade, working as the top Sien'tai of his tribe. Recognizing faces, assessing when to strike, and remaining undetected are all skills he's honed with years of training. He outpaced every one of his classmates, memorizing poisons and perfecting his abilities to manipulate the air around him into lethal blades.
Past his unnatural abilities, Ai is still a human. He can break just like anyone else. He's very physically fit, all the same, and well-trained in combat.
